Every woodworker has a stash of timber, and somewhere in their midst is a couple of their favourite pieces, that are brought out to be admired, stroked, and replaced with reverence. Touching wood that has been dated to around 17,000 years is a way to make contact with an unknown time.
Rivergum Timbers has ancient pines that come from Stanley River in Tasmania, and were collected in the 1970s. They give us a tangible sense of a pre-contact Australia. The pale grains of the King Billy, Celery Top and Huon Pines tell another story of country, so that we further develop a sense of this ancient land’s voice.
